Interview with Sir Patrick Goodman

Interview with Sir Patrick Goodman.

Patron of Motueka Golf Club

Perspective from Sir Patrick Goodman
Thursday 4th September

Motueka is the hub of the ever changing, beautiful Tasman region. Nature has blessed it with the Waimea Inlet to the South, golden beaches to the North and the mountains to the West. The seasons are distinctly different, adding variation, as our landscapes changes. Motueka Golf Club sits between the majestic Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National parks, trampers and kayakers paradise. Our rivers are filled with feeding trout, our beaches pristine and the Waimea inlet is one of the most interesting of them all.

Amidst all this natural beauty is the Motueka Golf course, looking out across the Tasman Bay. My grandfather, Mr John McCarthy, just after the first world war chose the site for the course. The first competition was played in 1921, initially only a 9 hole course, which some years later was extended over the other side of the road where an additional 9 holes were developed, infact, it was my mother, a keen golfer who played the first hole on the new side.

Much has changed over the years as the Motueka Golf club and its active members continue to improve the course, The introduction of automatic watering systems means that the greens and fairways are always in optimum condition.

I have been lucky enough to play on many marvellous courses around the world but I still feel Motueka, with it’s tree lined fairways, is one of the most beautiful and deceptively challenging courses in New Zealand.

Motueka golf club is part of the community, it isn’t about capability or status, it’s a welcoming and friendly place and members go out of their way to help visitors have a great experience.

I have established a trust at the club to encourage the development of golf to our local youth. I believe young people should have the opportunity to play this wonderful sport, which I believe can help to develop life skills, such as persistence and striving for perfection.

The club understands the time constraints people face today and are actively promoting 9 hole competition golf to encourage more people to play the game and to further develop the membership.

I believe that the course as it exists today, has completely fulfilled the founder members dream and I know I will always have a love for the course.
