Doug's Doodlings -Mens Club Captain's Comments

Doug's Doodlings -Mens Club Captain's Comments

One week on from the Open and the good golf has come from others, gone from others. I forgot to thank a couple of our sponsors last week , accountants Nisbett and Fleming and the graphics and design company of Cutting Edge both supported the Open. Thanks Tony and Dave (aka Gus). As with our other sponsors, please support them. Speaking of design and sponsorship the tee markers are being redone with sponsorship of some holes now available, see me in the first instance if you are interested.

Dot Golf is now working and you should use those cards in preference to the old printed ones, sorry about the delay in get to Open scores to the handicap system, some of you would have been happy. They are all there now and as are those sad hole scores.

Congratulations to Allan Hamilton on his round of 9 under to win the Bevan Grooby Memorial and to Sunny Lee on her win in the ladies event.

Mug next week, your chance to qualify for "2013 Mug of the Year".

The AB flag has survived the "summer", well half of it, a good sign for 2012.

Happy golfing

Reports
Presidents Report - Rob Guild
It is my pleasure to report on the clubs activities for the year ended 31st August 2010.
Your Management team have been working hard through the year to manage costs and increase revenue. We have been relatively successful with costs although there are still areas that require attention, but revenue has drifted due to recession and weather effect? There is still a lot of work to be done to increase membership/revenue. We will engage in membership drives and promotion using methods that are economical but achieve the desired results. Again we ask all members to "Do their bit" to promote the club to friends and neighbours and encourage them to join. There are many options to create interest. Full membership, 9 hole, twilight etc.
There will have to be increases in subscriptions again this year. We are very aware that increases are not popular but if we are to try to maintain our financial position and not go backwards we must make the necessary adjustments. There are increases in all our expenses ie. Affiliation fees, GST, power, wages, fertilizer, sprays etc etc. Club members will be asked to approve an increase to all membership by 5% again this year but this will be rounded down to $550.00 for full membership. All other catagories will be adjusted by the same %. Bar prices have been adjusted with the House committee mindfull of the effect of any increase but we are not in a position to subsidize prices.
My thanks to all our management team for the work they have put in over the last 12 months to ensure we all enjoy our membership of this club. Thanks to Doug Anderson for the work he has put in, in his first year as our Club Captain. Doug is another of those guys who puts more into the job than is expected and that's what makes this club work and Jan Sinclair, our Secretary/Treasurer continued to handle both roles well and has done a very good job under pressure at times. Thanks Jan.
Both House and Match committees have worked hard on new ideas. The House Committee under the guidance of Eric (Tookie) Inwood and Grace Latimer have really performed this year and the income generated by your team is greatly received.Special mention of the young raffle girl, Norma. Thanks to all of you for the good work. There will be changes in personell this comming year. Grace Latimer is stepping down as Vice Chair of the house committee. Thanks Grace for your time and effort.
The Match committee has continued to provide us with a variety of competitions throughout the year and considering the weather interuptions has done a great job to get events played without too much disruption.
I now make special mention of Ken Osborne. It's not often that people become involved in club affairs for any length of time without getting satisfaction from the effort they put in or there is no point. Ken has been a committee man and member of management for as long as I can remember. From House to Match he has always gone the extra mile when performing the duties required, Twilight and Business house golf would probably not have become the success they have without his drive and his chairmanship of the Match committee has kept the programme running smoothly. Ken's health has let him down a bit lately and reluctantly he is stepping down from this chairmanship but I'm sure his affection for the club and his tenacity will mean he will still be around to help whereever he can.
Thanks to the Greenkeepers, Colin Williams and Richard Lelong, for keeping our course in great order throughout the year and also to the volunteer group who help out. Richard has now retired after twenty-five years and we thank him for that dedication to our course and wish him all the best for the futire leisure time. I'm sure he'll find plenty to do and we look forward to seeing him enjoy the course he has helped develope over the years. I also take this opportunity to welcome Nick Van Leuween to the staff and know that a few fresh ideas will help keep our course at the top of the must plays in the top of the south.
To Jaimee-Lee Moses thanks for your assistance in maintaining the professional duties and the shop under what must, at times, be a fairly tedious task.
Thanks also to Debbie Moses and her staff for providing great service and refreshments in the clubhouse for the past two years and at the same time welcome Michelle Ward to replace Debbie and trust she receives the continued support of members.
Golf wise, remember the McCarthy Goodman mixed event next weekend and of course the Motueka Open on the 14 & 15th of January. All your Committees put a lot of effort into these tournaments but participation is vital for success.
Members suggestions for any aspect of our clubs well being are always welcome, we need to know if the management team is doing the job right.
Many thanks to all our sponsors for without your support the club would struggle.
To NBS, your continued major sponsorship is most appreciated along with that from the Goodman family, Whitwells Menswear, New World Supermarket, Nelson Holdings (Super Liquor) Shoreline Restaurant and the many other local business who continually support the club by way of donation and provision of prizes.
I also thank Geoff Milnes for the preparation of our annual accounts.
Congratulations to all club champions and trophy winners and thanks to club members for their participation in these events.
Well done to the Sloan team for defending the title yet again and to Emily Greenhough for being crowned champion of champions.
Club members have excelled in events all season. Mens Country Club individual and team, S.I.Masters Games with gold in every event entered.
Finally I thank all members for your support of management and events during the past 12 months.

Financial Report - Geoff Milnes
The President introduced Geoff Milnes to present the Financial Report.
Geoff spoke about the Report and told members this had already been presented to the Management Committee. He said the members should be aware that the Club has again run at a small loss ($8300 approx) and that we all need to give some thought as to how this can be reversed over the next financial year. We cannot afford to continue to run at a loss, even a small one, as this will eventually deplete any funds we currently have. He touched on the fact that in these times it is becoming more difficult to make a cash profit.
Geoff then referred to different areas of the financial report:
House Committee - Gross profit up on last year which is a great effort. The gross profit, less Bar Wages still giving an overall profit of $9000.00.
Membership - this is always a battle to increase membership but at present we are holding the status quo.
Green Fees - these are down this year but this is largely due to the fact we have had such poor weather throughout the winter months.
Tournaments are up slightly.
Ground's staff has managed to keep costs down and comparable to the last season. Irrigation, which has been a great improvement for the course, does involve high ongoing running costs.
Matters Arising:
1) Penny Vincent asked where the rental money came from.
The Treasurer advised that rent comes from cart shed and club storage plus the Pro Shop.

2) Barry Walker commented that members should be concerned at the lack of funds.
The President answered by saying members need to take responsibility. Lots of weekend events are poorly patronised and this is where extra revenue should be being generated. We all need to look for and encourage new members. He understands that people have other interests but members should concentrate on making an effort to take part in club fixtures.
Moved the adoption of the Financial accounts G Milnes/ E Hay Carried

Green Keeper's Report - Colin Williams
It was a very long and wet Winter. With more than usual rain all the drains that were put in around the course worked well. The Greens come through the winter well.
The coring went well this Spring. The John Deere sweeper proved to be one of the best pieces of gear we have ever bought.
All the gear is in good condition. The new Rough mower will tidy up the Rough giving a better cut at less cost than the gangs ever did . The fairways have been cored and sprayed for weeds. This year we will be trying a spray to control all grass weeds in the fairways in late December and February.
Nick joined the grounds staff in October after Dick retired after 25 years. One job we would like to see done is the 18th green top levelled of it would not take much to do.
The drains up around 16/12/17 could be extended to take off more surface water but this will all depend on finance.
Matters Arising
1) Rob Vincent asked with regard to fertilising - how much, what kind and how often?
How many hectares is the course.

Colin Williams advised twice a year on ridges only and Sulphate of ammonia used.
The course is roughly 18 hectares.

2) Daphne Hamilton commented on how nice the bunkers are now looking.
Colin Williams advised this was thanks to work carried out by Nick.
Rob suggested that members can talk to Doug Anderson, Colin Williams or Nick Van Leeuwen if they wish to help on the course. This would help to keep costs down if everyone made a small effort.
Referees' Report - Ken Bell - tabled.
As Ken was unable to give his report verbally because he was unwell, his report was tabled.
Motueka Refereeing Year
Motueka is well represented with 1/3 of all Referees in Nelson District coming from Motueka.
2011 Rules Course had 23 attendees at Nelson and 16 at Motueka which included 6 people doing the course for the first time.
The Referees annual tournament (Sel England Trophy) was won by Motueka. Motueka has held the trophy since 2005.
2012 Rules Course starts 20th August and will include practical demonstrations.
Every serious golfer should do a Rules Course as they will learn something which will give them an advantage at whatever level they play.

Remit
Constitution amendments:
The amendments having been circulated were discussed and confirmed.

Life Member Norma Westrupp then spoke to the meeting.
"Mr President, fellow golfers. In accordance with the Club Constitution any full member may nominate a member who has given long and valuable service to the Club, as a Life Member. It is my intention to put a notice of motion to you that Ken Osborne be given that
Honour. Ken has been a member for 20 years, a member of the Social Committee, Chairman of the House Committee and Chairman of the Match Committee for 12 years.
He has organised sponsors for tournaments and twilight.
He has also spent many hours in the Match Room working on committee business. He has been a member of the Management Committee for several years and on occasions, when ground staff have needed extra help on mowing the fairways Ken would be there on the gang mowers."

The President then formally conferred the status of Life Member on Ken Osborne and presented him with a Life Member badge.
Ken replied that he was humbled but very appreciative of the presentation. He has enjoyed his time with the Club and even though it has been a lot of work, he has been more than happy to do it. He thanked the Club for their recognition of his work.
Subscriptions
The recommendation from the Management Committee is to raise the subscriptions by 4.75% making a full subscription $550.00. The 4.75% will be across the board for all types of membership.
Moved that subscriptions be increased by 4.75% across the board

General Business:
1) Question from the floor with regard to the amount of money paid to the Professional.
Rob advised the members that this was an employment issue and should not therefore be discussed at an AGM.
2) Bob Cooke -
Bob advised members he is impressed with the new caterer and has taken photos for the website of Michelle and some of her food offered to players.
3) Green Fees - at this stage the green fees will stay the same
It was suggested that if members see green fee players starting on other than hole # 1 they inquire politely if they have paid their green fees. It is felt that a number of green fee players are not paying and this could be a way of recouping those losses.
Doug Anderson advised members the Dotgolf card system was being installed soon and hopefully that will help to eliminate the problem of green fees.
4) Cart hire fee - apparently at Greenacres they are charging $35.00 and at Nelson $45.00.
We may need to look at our pricing.
5) Minutes - Paul Hay suggested it might be appropriate to email the Minute to all Club members.

As there was no further business the President thanked everyone for attending and advised coffee, tea and some food were available. The meeting closed around 9.00 pm.

These minutes will be posted in the Club House and on the Club Website for perusal by members unable to attend the meeting. They will be verified at the 2012 Annual General Meeting.
